A flea market purchase of the Satyagraha opera by Philip Glass (with one the 4 LPs missing) inspired the lyrics and theme to this song. The seemingly shapeshifting instrumental part is a backdrop for spoken word-like political statements and metaphors.
lyrics
A politician turned into a saint, Like a tiger that’s grown wings,
Our lives are about to change
A paralyzing vitality, The world down on its (bleeding) knees.
I am not afraid to ask, I am not afraid to speak.
More than I thought there was to lose
Fits of love and bursts of jealousy, No (im)patience left in me
I’ll take it upon myself, A nonviolent protest
More than I thought I had to prove
Wouldn’t pay for my sins
Wouldn’t pay for my drinks
Wouldn’t pay for my sins
Wouldn’t stay till the end
More than I thought it cost
I took on the weight it was way too much.
If that’s who we are, I’ll pour our sins,
In plastic cups, From which we all shall drink.
You had some things to say
Wanted me to do the same
It wasn’t something i could back up or understand
I’m vile, not a care in the world
I wolfed down all those sins tonight, I did not waste away.
Reach inside // Reach inside
Hold my mind // Hold it tight
Take my life // Take my life
I don’t want it anymore
Nothing inside, can we make up our own minds
Has the tiger lost its wings, are we to trust our sanity?
Can you talk the way you paint, can you look the other way?
Is it awful what we do, is it awful what we do?
Is it?
